Gwelo

Gwelo is a cosy one bedroomed two storey mid-terrace cottage built in the early 19th century. It is located within the lower end of the steeply sloping Railway Street, which links low town with high town, in the market town of Bridgnorth, located some 20 miles south east of the county town of Shrewsbury, on the A458.

It is within easy walking distance of both low and high town, which have good local amenities - shopping, pubs, restaurants, theatre and a three screen cinema.

Gwelo consists of a cosy lounge with a decorative open fireplace, TV with digital freeview receiver and DVD player and CD HiFi. It has a fully functional kitchen with electric oven, fridge/freezer and microwave oven etc.

There is a wooden stairwell leading to the second storey which features a small landing where both the bathroom and bedroom lead from.

Behind the cottages in Railway Street, is virtually a street of caves, which were inhabited before the railway came and are now used as outhouses for the cottages. Apparently the painting entitled ‘Lizzes Bower’, which was exhibited in the Royal Academy depict notorious local prostitutes outside a cave home, at present an outhouse to one of the cottages at the lower end of Railway Street. The cave behind Gwelo appears to be one of these cave houses!

Work is under way to restore the Cave behind the cottage to reflect what it would have been like when it was used as a dwelling.

There are some fully restored cave houses located approximately 5 miles away which are now part of the National Trust. There are some pictures of these 'Cave Houses' in the 'Gallery' page

"Gwelo is an ideal retreat to take you away from the stresses and strains of everyday life for a relaxing break with plenty of things to see and do and many within walking distance"
